2009 Seminars

A is for Ale- George Hummel:
Join the award winning brewer and beer writer as we break down the A,B,C’s of beer. Sample a selection of ales and lagers from the attending brewers as well as some of George’s award winning homebrews. A discussion of basic homebrewing procedures will be included.

About the speaker: In May of 2008, George received the Governor's Inspiration Award for promoting craft beer and brewing in the state of Pennsylvania and for his work in setting up the hugely successful Philly Beer Week. George is a member of an old Philadelphia brewing family. His grandfather was brewmaster for Philadelphia Brewing Co. and his great grandfather was a brewer in Stuttgart, Germany. He is a beer author, an award winning Homebrewer including several "Best of Show" awards and a BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) Recognized Beer Judge.

George can be contacted at Home Sweet Homebrew, 2008 Sansom St. Philadelphia PA 19103, 215-569-9469 or george@brewingnews.com

Beer at the Table- Karl Smith:
Learn that beer is wine’s equal at the table and the how’s and why’s of pairing PA beer with food. Sample menus will be discussed. A sampling of food friendly beers and a lively discussion on possible food pairings will ensue.

2008 National Home-brew Competition Rules & Regulations

Please note that AHA style guidelines have been adjusted to meet industry standards. Carefully read each style description before selecting a specific category for your entry. Category numbers have been changed in some cases.
There are 24 categories of lager, ale or mixed-style beers, three categories of mead and one category of cider. All have subcategories that use small-letter designations. If a beer is entered, for example, as "10b) Strong Scotch Ale" it will be judged as a Strong Scotch Ale against the other entries in the "English and Scottish Strong Ale" category. Except for some categories where special ingredients are used (see Part II), judges do not see your recipe information. They do, however, use these guidelines when evaluating your entry.
The following section gives more detailed information about each category and subcategory. You should use this information to decide how to enter your home-brew. Please note that when a style characteristic is designated "OK," this means it does not have to be apparent but it is permissible in amounts indicated. When the term "noble-type" hops is used, it refers to European continental-type hops such as Saaz, Hallertauer, Tettnanger and Spalt, to name a few.
Categories are designated by numbers. Subcategories are designated by letters.
